Howdy,

So, my husband is smart, passionate about his work, funny, loves his kids, and beats me at Monopoly just about all the time. He's also a typical guy who loves football, tech, gadgets; and not into emotions unless it's about one of those impossible wins the Patriots managed to pull off.

I've been trying to nudge him him to work on his emotions. (Good luck, you say. ;-) I believe that "It’s not only children who grow. Parents do too."

Last night, my daughter turned 6, the kids were excited to play a Hangman game she got as a gift. My daughter picked the word, with my help on the spelling. And my son was working hard to guess it.

_ A L _ O N (no S)

"It's really hard. How about a clue." So we gave him one, it has feathers. My son was starting to feel very stressed as he's got only three letters left, then two.

I wanted to give him another clue but my daughter covered my mouth, giggling hard. "No, no, you are not allowed to give a letter."

My husband walked by and said "Falcon. Now go to bed! It's late.".

My son's face fell. Then he started crying and ran upstairs.

Surprised, my husband ran after him. I heard "Calm down, it's just a game. It's not a big deal." My son slammed the door.

I brushed my daughter's teeth and put her to bed. She said, "let's talk about our feelings." She felt sad about her brother feeling upset, and that next time we can give him another clue.

Then I went to my son's room: "You're feeling sad and angry." He nodded. "At dad and mom." He nodded, then said "I wanted to do it myself. I just need some help, and you guys didn't help me."

I told my husband what the kids said. Parenting sure provides plenty of opportunities for us to learn from, daily! :)

This morning, I came down and found the kids playing the game together, happily. Apparently my daughter asked for a hard word and she's stumped. Well, I learned a new word too! ( _ E _ E _ _ I N E )
