Teachers for Democracy | Soccer Nights | Summer Solstice
Howdy,
How are you & your kids handling the last week of school? Excited for the summer vacay? Sad to see friends go? Or both?
Mine are looking forward to spending time with their grandparents next week. Then lots of our community school's camp, their favorite.
But first this week, I found out last minute that I had to take my kids with me to make a statement about the Parent Summit Coalition the School Committee meeting. I was concerned whether they'll behave, but it turned out to be a very enriching experience.
First, there was a sea of red! Members of our teacher union, the Cambridge Education Association, turned out in force to show support for the paraprofessionals who don't yet have a contract in place.
My daughter was happy to recognize a few friends from school, then got super excited when she saw one of her teachers in a red T shirt also, then another teacher from our school! She had tons of questions about why are they here? What is a union?
They kids also got to see the back room where they film the meeting. Ohhh!
Once the meeting starts, there was a long line of people making public statements, starting with a number of teachers who were union contract reps, and one in particular made an impassioned plea. Then they all got up a left.
"Wait, why they all left?" my daughter asked.
"Because they took time out of their busy day to come and show this is important to them, and now have to get back to their family."
Then the kids got to see two Cambridge students, in 6th and 7th grades speak. Both of whom were very compelling in telling their own stories.
Then I made my statement and we took our leave as my daughter got hungry and a bit bored lying on the carpet. :)
On the way back, my son told me I did great, and that if he was the mayor he'd say I was right! I think he was proud of me. :)
I asked him what he thinks of democracy. He said, "What's the other choice?"
"Oh, like a king or dictator who tells everyone what to do. "
He decided he prefers democracy. :)
